Last summer Long had the opportunity to live in New York City
and intern at W magazine, a fashion magazine owned by Condé Nast,
the same company that publishes
Teen Vogue
.
“I don’t think that it would have been possible to secure the
internship at W, without having the years of experience at David
Bailey Associates and
Virginia Capitol Connections
,” Long said. “I
had the opportunity to gain professional office experience, hone my
editing skills and have my work published while I was still in college.”
While Long has had many accomplishments, one of her proudest
came with a class in features and magazine writing.
“I was able to write an article about any topic in the city of
Richmond and I wrote an article about the problems with poverty and
healthy food access in Richmond,” Long said. “I rode the bus from an
eastern neighborhood to get groceries and I saw how long it took. It was
an extremely transformative experience for me. That was so different
from living on campus and walking to the dining hall each day.”
Long also spoke on an extensive project she took on for DBA this
past year:
“Last year we made a
legislative staff directory,”
Long said. “It doesn’t look
like a lot, but it’s extremely
daunting to track down all 140
legislators’ staff members
and take their pictures. That
was a huge challenge. This
year Mr. Bailey has also
given me more responsibility
with the magazine and my
role has grown tremendously
compared to my first year,”
she said. “It’s very flattering
to be given that kind of
responsibility.”
Fifth Position:
Juggling
“My mom used to say that my sister would grow up to have a career
in the performing arts, and I would be a comedian,” Long said. “My
sister and I loved to put on shows for our family members. Today she
is a classical dancer, but I haven’t yet tried out my stand-up routine.”
Now, Long is not a comedian or a ballerina—but a childhood in
dance taught her an important lesson that allows her to now juggle
multiple responsibilities. From a recently finished position as a
features editor at
The Collegian
to her internship at a well-respected
fashion magazine, to her classes as a student to her work at DBA,
Long has used the discipline she learned in ballet as a child to fulfill
her responsibilities with excellence and grace as an adult.

Brennan Long
is in a class by herself. During the past thirty years we have
enjoyed working with more than three score university interns. As
we enter the 20
th
year of publishing Virginia Capitol Connections
Quarterly Magazine, we reflect on many notable students who
worked with us for a semester. Among those who have performed
admirably, Brennan’s work ethic and creativity place her among
the few at the top.
Brennan served as an intern in the fall of her second year at
UR, and her stellar performance led to her receiving this offer in
December 2011:
During this next phase of your academic career, you are officially
invited to continue working with David Bailey Associates during
the 2012 Session of the General Assembly. We hope that the
experience and the status of being our ‘issue’ editor will provide
long-term benefits.
Several summer or fall interns have been invited to join our staff
for a session of the Virginia General Assembly. Brennan is one of
only three university students who have subsequently become
regular part-time employees. One served as an administrative
assistant in the early years of my business. Another’s technical
abilities led to his being our Webmaster for almost twenty years.
Brennan’s organizational skills coupled with her editing/writing
have kept her on our staff since her initial internship.
As Brennan leaves us upon her graduation from the University of
Richmond, we wish her the best of life’s journeys. Virginia Capitol
Connections and David Bailey Associates have benefitted from
having you on our team. Go with God.
